Grasping For a Glimpse (A Prayer Poem)
O God
my maker and caretaker
there is so much of you I cannot grasp
Why did you surrender to profuse pain
in the garden
and then on the cross?
Why do you love everyone
especially sinners
even vile offenders?
Why do you allow destruction
including the natural kind
but especially of the innocent?
I am a mere follower
embryonic, evolving, unadorned
bearing unbidden clouds
I am spiritually undernourished
craving fruits of the spirit
faint with hunger for blue skies
I am messy with doubt
longing for untainted passion
pleading for purified miracles
My eyes see poorly
blinding sacred assurance
blocking the light of goodness
My ears hear discordance
deafening harmony
dissolving creation’s concerto
My skin is scathed with sadness
aching for forgiveness
anxious for a healing solvent
Bowing, I see the Gift
in sacrifice and
in a prince’s peace
Bowing, I hear the Gift
in sorrow and
in a child’s laughter
Bowing, I feel the Gift
in scars and
in a loving embrace
O God
lover of my soul
there is so much of you to glimpse
